Unit Title: How to make an apple pie and see the world
Grade Level: Third Grade
Subject: Social Studies
Duration: 7-8 days


Goals


Problem: What would happen if there were no grocery stores? How would you get your food? Over the next few days, you are going to determine what you would do if this really happened. You will be given a recipe for an apple pie. You have to virtually travel around the world to find the natural resources to make the pie. So, how do you make an apple pie and see the world?


Technology Standard: 3-5 (8-11) Use digital imagging technology to modify or create works of art for use in a digital presentation.



Content Standards:

Social Studies:

3.2.1 Resource vs Product - Distinguish the difference between a natural resource and finished product 3.2.3 Imports or Exports - Distinguish between imports and exports

Language Arts:

3.2.1 Complete a simple graphic organizer to group ideas for writing (e.g., webbing).

3.2.14 Identify the most reliable source of information for preparing a report.

Math

306.4.8 Estimate and/or measure the capacity of a container.

Prerequisite Skills: Students must have prior knowledge of surfing the Internet and using PowerPoint. Also, cooperative learning skills are required to complete the project. Students will have been introduced to basic economic terms, such as natural resources, products, etc. They will be furthering their knowledge of these topics as well as imports and exports.

Objective: Students will determine the path at which natural resources become a finished product by virtually traveling the world via use of the Internet, complete a graphic organizer, and write a paragraph describing the natural resources in which are used to make an apple pie.
